A very rare Liberty style Gillows of Paris walnut and leather Art Deco footstool designed by legendary French Art Deco designer Paul Follot (1877 - 1941). Leather studded over a walnut frame with turned walnut finials. Original Champs Elysees retailers plaque to underside. Missoni feather down cushion to the piece which is very stylistically of the period. Fabulous decorative item that would make an excellent footstool or small dog/cat bed.
Paul Follot was born in 1877 in Paris. His father was the wallpaper manufacturer Félix Follot, of the Societé Charles Follot. Paul Follot headed his own decorating company, catering to a wealthy clientele, and gained a reputation for quality and elegance. He made luxury furniture for his company and designed textiles for Cornille et Cie and silver for Christophe throughout his career. In 1911 he made china designs for Wedgewood. In 1913 he designed furniture for Germain Lubin. Follots pedigree as a leading designer was cemented in history and he is one of the leaders of the Art Deco movement. He has had huge influence beyond France and his style is often copied.
After World War I more of the large department stores began to operate workshops to make furniture and decorative art objects for the middle classes. In 1923 Follot took charge of the Pomone decorative art workshop of Le Bon Marché department store, which made affordable, good quality furniture and decorations.
From 1928 Follot was a director of the Paris branch of Waring & Gillows the English furniture company and produced some of their finest Art Deco furniture which is now highly sought after. Certain pieces can be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum and in fine Country houses throughout the world
