Beautiful Antique Girandole Rococo Gilt & Gesso Mirror Circa 1770

£995.00

An exceptional antique Girandole gilt and gesso mirror. Sourced from the South Of France this superior quality statement mirror is beautiful in all aspects. Pierced gilt decorative gilt work with triple candle arms.

The name Girandole derives from the candle arms that extend from the frame, allowing the candlelight to reflect off the  mirror and illuminate an entire room.

The mirror dates from 1770 which is known as Rococo period and uses elements of the Baroque and Regency styles excessively. Themes found in nature, such as plants, vines, and acanthus leaves, are forming the main source of inspiration for this style. Other motifs used are flowing scrolls, frills and curls on the gold leaf frames. Characteristics for this period is that motifs became more delicate and asymmetrical, resulting in a light and playful style.

All of our 18th and 19th century mirrors are individual works of art, framing a unique time-image of history. The majority of our mirrors contain their original mercury or silver nitrate mirror glass. Mercury glass consists of an alloy of mercury and tin that creates the reflecting surface. Original mirror plates have history and detailing that cannot be replicated and each mirror is unique. Foxing of the glass where the mirror plate ages over time adds  timeless beauty to a mirror. The faded grandeur from years ago. Modern bland reproduction mirrors cannot match the beauty or tell a story when looked at as an original antique mirror.
