A rare set of six original midcentury Galvanitas S22 compass leg chairs. A timeless and industrial design from Dutch origin with solid, slender and honest design. The basis for the collection was laid by Galvanitas in the 1960s. Characteristics synonomous of this rare iconic design are the frame and the compass legs of pressed sheet steel. This technology was revolutionary in the mid-twentieth century with a new manafacturing and design process to the usual tube construction. Sought after cement grey compass legs with injection moulded riveted bucket shell seat design. The uniqueness of this model is that the metal frame does not extend beyond the seat frame, enabling easy stacking and space saving design.
Modern day collectors pieces of statement furniture to be used and admired as from the day they were manufactured. Makers stamp to each chair.
Dutch furniture manufacturer Galvanitas has remained family-owned since Willem Thuring first opened his metalworks in the southern part of the Netherlands in 1934. In the years surrounding World War II, Galvanitas expanded its production to include mechanical metal furniture, like hospital beds and barber chairs. Paul Thuring, Willem’s son, took over in the late forties and introduced school furniture to the company’s product line—a decision that proved highly rewarding following the war. A vast proportion of Dutch schools used Galvanitas steel-and-plywood chairs in their classrooms through the end of the 20th century and beyond. Now synonymous with solid and durable construction, the company helped to establish the utilitarian style that defined midcentury modernism in the Netherlands.
Galvanitas’s chairs were produced in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Made of folded steel and German Pagholtz plywood—sturdy, practical, and inexpensive they were designed for heavy use in public buildings, including schools, institutions, hospitals, and dining halls. Thanks to the minimalist, industrial look, the chairs have become design must haves.
