An exceptional and very rare King George VI Coronation velvet chair with matching footstool. Numbered 3 to underside of chair with makers stamp W Hands & Sons stamped underneath with crown, GR cypher VI 1937. Matching Stool stamped 'GRVI Coronation’, Waring & Gillow. Peers chairs were used in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. Not many survived and to have both the chair and stool still matching together after all these years is very rare. Limed oak frame with lovely open grain and detailing with original velvet upholstery finished with gold braid banding with the Kings royal cypher to top left corner. This matching pair are very rare as in they have a very low number stamp of 3 denoting from the seating plan of Westminster that direct Royalty would have been assigned this set.
Chairs of this calibre rarely come to the open market and in the rare instance these chairs have been advertised they have achieved high sale prices. Historic auction house sales have exceeded the guide prices significantly. Highly sought after by Royal family collectors and furniture collectors.
These chairs/stools feature among the ubiquitous English country house furnishings. The velvet- or velour-covered coronation chair used by the monarch at coronations are the chairs and stools that feature at stately homes and castles in the United Kingdom and accommodated guests at the Coronations of George VI in 1937 and Elizabeth II in 1953. They were later sold by the government to attendees. Naturally, there is a pecking order to these things: chairs were more desirable; stools were supposedly used for less important guests…
Inject glamour & style into any setting with this beautiful statement chair set with direct Royal linkage.
