An exceptional example of the highly sought after English country house Regency bergere/library chair. A rare statement piece of furniture with fabulous form/design by the leading furniture makers of the day, Gillows. This is an absolutely beautiful early version in incredible order for its age. Signature Gillows reeded legs and hand carved scroll arm rests. Thick rough cut hewn timbers to frame confirming age and superior quality. Deep patina from years of use, where centuries of hands have rubbed away. Beautiful original inset brass castors to front legs, splayed rear legs, and barrel back with central support stretcher. A very fine chair circa 1820. Cane in fair order for age with no holes or breaks. Currently in our private collection. The chair is not stamped with makers ident, however we know from our years of experience and dealing in fine antiques alongside Gillows templates/designs that this can only of been created by Gillows. No doubt a private country house commission, thus no retail makers stamp.
Originally the chair would have had a cushion base over the seat area, we can supply at extra cost a tailor made feather down cushion in a choice of fabric if required through our in house upholstery service. We have a later good quality seat cushion that came with the chair that can be sold/included with chair if required as would be a good template or temporary seat cushion.
