An Exquisite Large Ornate Early Antique Decorative Renaissance Terracotta Frieze Wall Plaque Panel Circa 1700

An exquisite and large early 18th Century decorative terracotta Frieze. Exceptional quality depicting Angelic Cherubs, cascading vines and fabulous detail. Decorative frieze reliefs like this composing of masks, vines, and hybrid creatures – part human, part animal or plant – proliferated in the decades around 1500. Inspired by ancient sculpture, particularly Roman sarcophagi, they provided profuse detail and variety for the architectural frameworks of chapels, altars, and shrines in Venice. Renaissance sculptors such as Antonio Lombardo produced these antique ornaments, taming pagan motifs for religious context. Circa 1700 this is a fabulous decorative antique statement piece.
