A Beautiful Rare Oil Painting By Sought After & Renowned RCA Midcentury Artist Sushila Singh 1904-1999

£600.00

A beautiful and very rare oil on board by the sought after and renowned Modern British artist Sushila Singh (1904 -1999).

This is Sushila Singh at the height of her abstract powers. A beautifully composed and powerful oil on board playing with darkness and light, substance and shadow. This is one of her finest works. This dramatic oil of the Acropolis in Athens/Greece is in Sushila Singh’s distinctive style, applying a balanced and complementary palette. Signed lower right with original gallery label to the reverse from the famous Mansard Gallery of Heals which showcased the most innovative art of the period.

Sushila Singh was born in India and studied at Hornsey School of Art and the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1929. Her early work was surrealist, her later work was more abstract with a near dream-like quality and is now being properly appreciated and sought after by collectors.

Singh took part in many shows including by the Arts Council’s ‘Committee for Encouragement of Music and the Arts’ (CEMA) during the Second World War and in public galleries including in Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield; her work is held in many galleries.

The gallery label to verso is intriguing as is signed S Andrews and not Sushila Singh. We can date the painting by this small detail as this would of been around the time when Singh married fellow modern British artist, Arthur Henry Andrews (1906-1966).They were fellow students at Hornsey School of Art and Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein, graduating in 1929. Andrew’s was made a member of the Design and Industries Association in 1934, SWE in 1935.  Sir Edward Marsh held his works, as do the Victoria and Albert Museum and public galleries in Leeds, Bournemouth and Southport. Singh & Andrew’s legacy/partnership are cemented in the history of Modern British Art. Among Singhs sold works is "Trafalgar Square", which achieved $1,070 USD at Bonhams Oxford way back in 2013. Singh’s works of art rarely come to the open market and are held in private collections/institutions. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a modern work of art that is to be appreciated along with strong long term investment prospects.
