Rare Still Life Oil On Canvas Painting By Leonard Huskinson Slade School Of Fine Art 1923-1925 Pupil Of Henry Tonks

£2,950.00

Slade School and Henry Tonks in full effect with this absolutely stunning still life. We love the simplicity and depth of subject on this oil painting. The artist is the renowned illustrator and teacher Leonard Huskinson who was at the Slade School of Fine Art. Huskinson is best known as a book illustrator; his, publications include Tom Brown’s Schooldays and Phineas Redux. His full name was Thomas Leonard Bousfield Huskinson, under which he is sometimes recorded (as is this painting). Huskinson was at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1923–5. He was art master at Radley College Oxford and while there had a solo show at the Beaux Arts Gallery Maddox Street London in 1934. The catalogue notes that he “showed more than ordinary artistic promise” while at the Slade Huskinson had “come under the direct influence”of the great artist and Professor [Henry] Tonks who’s pupils included Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and friends and co workers were Rodin, Sickert, Sargent & Whistler. There are tones and clear influence from Tonks and Huskinsons time spent as a pupil at the Slade in this painting.

The oil is signed to top right 1949 and has the artist’s/Huskinsons signature to the back on the original frame (which is a thing of beauty by itself).Huskinsons works are exceptionally rare and can be found in museums and private collections. Full provenance as above. Works rarely come to the open market.

86cm width 74cm height.

As a genuine antique / vintage item there is wear and use commensurate with age. Historic repairs to hinges and historic fault line to underside of extending leaf which has historic repair. None of these detract from look or use of the piece and are very common in pieces of furniture of this age. Some wooden products may have signs of historic woodworm. As a precaution we apply a clear triple action woodworm treatment that also kills wet rot, dry rot and woodworm. Please look at all the images carefully and ask any questions pre purchase as we do not unfortunately offer refunds due to the size and shipping costs of our antiques/items.  All our items are available on line at Search & Rescued and other online stores.
