A very rare early antique American voyage/travelling trunk. This chest is one of the best chests we have had the pleasure of handling. Its detailing and history are unique. Dating from 1860 with decorative brass swag detailing/borders and beech banded with original canvas lining. Makers plate confirming a travelling chest of distinction with makers name S KNUDSON West Madison Chicago. Beautiful lock escutcheons with inlaid cast patent numbers (again confirming over and above quality). Inlaid cast number “5” to above each lock escutcheons. Original intact leather handles into decorative escutcheons. This voyage chest/trunk screams high quality and is highly unique, we have never seen the like and the craftsmanship is higher quality than Louis Vuitton travel chests of the same period. The chest will have been used for transporting very precious cargo and to show off one’s wealth with the decorative detailing and style of chest. Dating from 1860 this trunk has history and is a fabulous looking piece of furniture that can be used for decorative purposes as a coffee table, bedside table/side table etc. Inject style and a talking point into any setting with this one of kind piece of history. Deep mellow patina in original paint/canvas from the day it was produced, also in good order considering its age and use.
