Early Rare Antique Coalbrookedale Cast Iron Oak Garden Bench Seat Circa 1844

£1,650.00

An exceptional early example of the sought after Coalbrookdale Dog & Serpent cast iron garden bench. Dating from 1844 with coalbrookdale diamond registration mark. This is one of the earliest benches of this design dated on stamp with a C for 1844. Fabulous quality with great patina and look to thick oak slats and metal work. Very heavy (two person lift).

“Dog and Serpent” was only the second bench design registered by the Coalbrookdale Foundry, in April 1844. This famous design was exported throughout the British Empire and beyond. It features hound head terminals to the arms of the supports, which incorporate a curled serpent entwined with a grapevine, the snakes’ wide-open mouth about to pluck a grape from the vine. The supports stand on elaborate stylized paw feet.
