The firm of Wilkinson was established circa 1790 by William Wilkinson, working in partnership with a relation Thomas Wilkinson.

By 1808 William had established a business of his own at 14 Ludgate Hill. From this prime location in the heart of the City, Wilkinson built up a flourishing trade, winning significant commissions from such distinguished clients as the Goldsmith’s Company. A versatile designer and craftsman, Wilkinson worked in a variety of styles, producing furniture in the Egyptian, Rococo, and Grecian manner (see Christopher Gilbert and Geoffrey Beard eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 977-978)

William Wilkinson was very successful going forward with his business. Some of his first furniture was stamped `WILKINSON LUDGATE HILL’.
