£2,250.00

An exceptional patinated gilt bronze sculpture of a crane sat atop a turtle and lotus plant wrapped around. Purchased directly from a New York collector at the renowned Chelsea antique fair we have had this in our private collection for the last 10 years. This stunning detailed bronze is simply gorgeous. Indistinct makers stamp to base of tortoise & mounted on a pretty marble base. Circa 1890.

In Chinese mythology, statues of turtles and cranes were exhibited in the interiors of the Forbidden City. At the turn of the 20th century, such sculptures were used to decorate the interiors of rich houses. The turtle and crane each symbolize enduring power and longevity. The two, standing together, represent a healthy long life of happiness.

The bronze sculpture has a fabulous patina dark, rich colouring with a highly animated pose with the crane looking down, intently patrolling the waters for fish. Exceptional quality, great decorative piece on black marble base.

Full Height 20cm x depth/width 10cm.
