An exceptional and very rare pair of "His & Hers" oxblood leather Hammond armchairs by Howard & Sons. Sought after turned walnut front legs with number stamps on base of rear legs of each chair with beautiful ceramic Cope & Collinson ceramic castors. Made to order directly from Berners Street factory for the Savoy Hotel London. (Directly supplied/ordered pieces were not always stamped). These sought after design icons have been owned by the same family for the last 100 years. Low slung seating, sprung seat bases and fabulous design. Wear associated with age, perfectly useable, leather worn in places, no rips, arm rests worn with years of use, adding to patina. For reference as per the sale at Dukes London Auction house this pair are identical in size/design to the Victorian upholstered armchairs sold in later reupholstered in red, white and foliate cotton. Sold for £5,720 in 2008. Fabulous investment pieces with the benefit of being practical and useable antiques.
