A selection of original DSW fibreglass chairs by Ray Eames from the 1950’s/60’s. Stamped with Herman Miller logo on base. All chairs in good order for age. No other business of its kind did more than the Herman Miller Furniture Company to introduce modern design into American homes. Working with legendary designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Alexander Girard, the Zeeland, Michigan-based firm fostered some of the boldest expressions of what we now call Mid-Century Modern style. In doing so, Herman Miller produced some of the most beautiful, iconic and, one can even say, noblest furniture of the past seven decades.

These chairs are all original 1950s Eames fibreglass shell chairs with original model sticker and stamp. Known as the DSW model.

Stamped with the "Early Cincinnati Milacron (Mercedes) dates it 1958-1965. Patent labels Sticker dates the chairs between 1956-59

Charles and Ray would spend endless hours in the factory, tweaking the dyes and making slight alterations to the specifications of each colour option, often creating several different shell samples in just one day to find the perfect shade. One hue that apparently caused the most frustration and was the most difficult to achieve was a warm blackish grey – after several attempts Charles Eames expressed: ‘What I really want is a black with feeling’. These efforts ultimately resulted in the colour the Eameses called Elephant Hide Grey.

The Eames Fiberglass Side Chair was introduced in 1951, a year after the original "shell" chair with arms was offered for sale. The back and seat of these chairs are made of a single piece of molded fiberglass contoured to the shape of the human body.  The Eames Plastic Chair DSW (Dining Height Side Chair Wood Base) was born in 1950, created from the designs of Charles & Ray Eames.

The original model was created for the “International Competition for Low-cost Furniture Design” held by the MOMA in New York.

The price is per chair variants in colours available please call/email for available number.
