A Beautiful Antique William & Mary Wingback Country House Library/Fireside Arm Chair

£1,250.00

A fabulous William & Mary Country House wingback  library/fireside chair with beautiful botanical themed fabric. The William & Mary period (1689-1702) was named after the marriage of the English Mary Stuart, the daughter of James II to the Dutch William of Orange. The Dutch loved their home and enjoyed real comfort for the time. When William & Mary assumed the throne they imported their comfortable furniture and brought craftsmen to England from Holland. This more comfortable style was well suited to ordinary person and thus William & Mary furniture caught on quickly following the Jacobean era of dark heavy looking furniture. The furniture in the William & Mary reign saw the first beginnings of comfortable seating. Upholstery became quite common. The chair backs were shaped to fit the shape of your back and the back legs were splayed out at the bottom to prevent the chair from tipping. This chair has fabulous proportions and shape. Beautiful swept carved legs with apron stretchers. A very high quality example apeing the period dating from around 1820 with makers stamp to rear splayed leg. Fabric in fair order for age, some areas going thin and threadbare to the arms which add to the charm and age of the piece. Exceptionally comfortable.
