Rare Antique Georgian George II Padouk Tilt Top Wine Table Circa 1790 Superior Quality

An exceptional Rare Georgian George II padouk tilt top wine table. Padouk is an exotic oriental hardwood, highly prized by British cabinet makers of fine quality furniture since first imported from the east in the early 18th century and is of the rosewood family. Cabinet makers such as Chippendale and Giles Grendy chose padouk wood for their finest furniture. The Chippendale workshop is known to have supplied furniture made from this exotic timber, including the celebrated padouk bookcase for Dumfries House in Scotland in 1759 as well as various commodes and tables of slightly later date.

The main sources of Padouk wood were the Andaman Islands and Burma. It varies in colour, from golden brown to deep red when first cut. Red is most characteristic of the Andaman variety, making it the preferred kind, due to the Burmese specimen's less brilliant colour. From 1720, it was only used for a few exceptional pieces, by the elite cabinet/furniture makers, such as Chippendale as only a small amount of the wood was imported.

This beautiful example is certainly the Andaman variety of Padouk due to its deep dark colour and graining. Fabulous quality. The simplicity in design with swept pad feet on a turned padouk pedestal tripod base is synonymous of only the finest cabinet makers of the Georgian period.

Dating from the George II period this is a rare example and superior quality over other wine tables. Some historic repairs to base/legs and table top edge (none detract from overall use or look of the piece) showing a well loved and cherished piece of furniture. These tables are to be used as intended and when not in use tilted up to show off the quality of craftsmanship and quality of design/look. Used as side tables, tea tables, breakfast tables they are the perfect addition to any room where you want to make a statement with high quality furniture. Perfect as a side/sofa table. We have dealt in 100’s of tilt top wine tables over many years and padouk furniture rarely comes to the market due to its very short import run back in the 1700’s when mahogany became more plentiful and used thereafter.

As a genuine antique / vintage item there is wear and use commensurate with age.  Some wooden products may have signs of historic woodworm. As a precaution we apply a clear triple action woodworm treatment that also kills wet rot, dry rot and woodworm.
