An exceptionally rare & beautiful Holland and Sons Country House armchair dating from 1843. Numerous works of Holland & Sons are held in the V&A Museum. The first choice by the elite of London & Royalty/Royal Family. Holland & Sons supplied Balmoral Castle, Buckingham Palace, Osbourne House, Carlton House & Windsor Castle. Holland & Sons were also commissioned by The Duke Of Wellington, Isambard Brunel, Lord Leighton & Speakers House Westminster. Having researched the back catalogue of Holland & Sons Cabinet makers & the knowledge of over 40 years of experience in the trade, this is one of the very first models to be produced from their newly opened premises at 19 Marylebone Street. Opened in 1843 with additional manufactory workshops at 38 Broad Street, Golden Square London. We can pin point this model of chair to cabinet maker John Mills who was employed by William Holland who took over the firm of Taprell & Holland & changed the name to Holland and Sons in 1843. From 1843 onwards Holland and sons were at the forefront of the movement for improvement in design as well as production of furniture. They were involved with Henry Cole’s Summerly Art Manufactures scheme in the 1840s, made and exhibited the ‘Repose’ armchair at the 1848 Society of Arts Exposition. Ground breaking in both design and manufacture for the time. This chair is completely original sleepy condition ready for reupholstery.
