With the incredible support of the Antique dealing community, an auction will be held to raise financial support for Tom's family, Tom was the owner of @brightlingantiques and has sadly passed away from cancer.

Tom was a renowned period house restorer and an exceptional antique dealer - professional, knowledgeable and passionate. He was also a beautiful person - kind, gentle and considerate, devoted to his wife Alice and their two young children.

The auction will start on Thursday 12th January until the Sunday 15th January.

A rare early Liberty & Co Canterbury/Paper/Magazine holding rack, designed by Leonard Wyburd. Very early Liberty & Co Gothic script red paper label & ivorine patent plaque. We cannot find another version the same anywhere. Beautiful design with oak reeded columns, porcelain & brass castors, brass hinges opening to paper storage lid. One of a kind & a must for any Liberty/furniture collector. This beautiful object is not only a design classic but a useable practical piece of furniture to be used as intended. 

Early authentic Liberty objects have a label of rectangular red or white paper with gothic script. A diamond label in orange card fixed with pins and with a registered design number is also known as is the stamped mark ‘Liberty & Co.’, impressed into the underside of wooden items. However, the most common form of labelling was a small lozenge-shaped plaque of ivorine or enamelled brass.  Occasionally numbers were stamped into the wood underneath or on the reverse of pieces. Examples of Liberty & Co. furniture stamps and labels and stamped locks are illus. Bennett (2012), pp. 299 & 301-3.

Having originally only stocked imported furniture, in 1883 Liberty employed the eighteen year old Leonard Wyburd as principal designer for Liberty & Co. Wyburd’s furniture designs were first published in its Art Furniture catalogue of 1884. From the time of Wyburd’s appointment there was a gradual inclusion in the Liberty stock of new pieces of furniture. Within ten years, no doubt with reference to Morris & Co. and to the published sources of E. W. Godwin, Bruce Talbert and Charles Eastlake, interpretations of Tudor, Jacobean and Elizabethan period furniture developed into a rugged vernacular style with armoured metalwork, heavy oak and medieval character often with carved friezes and painted decoration.

 As a genuine antique there is wear and use commensurate with age. Some wooden products may have signs of historic woodworm. As a precaution we apply a clear triple action woodworm treatment that also kills wet rot, dry rot and woodworm.
